About Ximenez Fatio House

The history of the Ximenez-Fatio House goes back to 1798, when the visionary Don Andrés Ximenez embarked on a remarkable endeavor, constructing a magnificent three-story coquina house in the heart of St. Augustine. This architectural marvel was intended to be a testament to his deep affection for his wife, Juana Pellicer.

Yet, as history often reminds us, tragedy lurks in the most unexpected corners. In 1802, the house was shrouded in sorrow when Juana, at the tender age of 26, departed this world. The following year brought further anguish with the loss of two of their five children. Andrés himself passed in 1806, leaving behind a legacy that would endure through the sands of time.

The house then transitioned into a new era. It became a residence for various tenants who managed the bustling downstairs business while finding solace in the upstairs chambers.

The year 1830 marked a significant turning point when Mrs. Margaret Cook assumed ownership of the property. Under her stewardship, it became a boarding house.

However, transitions continued to shape the house’s destiny. In 1851, the indomitable Miss Louisa Fatio took charge, guiding the house through challenging times. Four years later, she secured ownership of the property, a milestone that would define her legacy.

Miss Fatio tirelessly maintained the house’s integrity for nearly a quarter of a century, weathering economic turmoil, the turbulence of secession, the Union’s occupation in 1862, and the tumultuous era of Reconstruction.

After Miss Fatio’s passing in 1875, the house remained within her family’s care until 1939 when The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Florida acquired the property. With a vision to preserve its rich history, they transformed it into a historic house museum.

Remarkably, today, this enchanting house continues to be owned and operated by women, carrying on the tradition that has defined its existence for decades, much like its earlier incarnation as a boarding house.

Amidst the historic tapestry of St. Augustine, the Ximenez-Fatio House stands as a radiant jewel, distinguished by its captivating fusion of old-world charm and unique building materials.

Two extraordinary materials were used in its construction: coquina and tabby. Coquina, a natural blend of sand and seashells, bestows upon the house a timeless allure. In contrast, tabby, a distinctive concoction of water, lime, sand, ash, and crushed oyster shells, contributes to the house’s historical significance.

When it comes to the age-old debate of preservation versus restoration, the Ximenez-Fatio House firmly champions the cause of preservation. Every historical facet, including the additions made after the original 1798 construction, such as the Cadiz Street wing, is cherished as an integral part of the house’s captivating narrative.

Fast-forward to the present day and the house stands as a testament to its resilience, having weathered 225 years of hurricanes, welcomed countless tourists, and provided shelter to numerous families. The unwavering commitment to preserving its enchanting history ensures that the timeless voyage through the annals of time continues, beckoning all to partake in its spellbinding allure.
